BLOG: Moonshot Goals - An Opportunity for Man's Best Friend to Make a Difference in Kids Cancer

Thoughts from CNK's Executive Director

The much anticipated Cancer Moonshot Goals are out - not surprisingly, the report states, new approaches and models are needed to crack pediatric cancers. Canines-N-Kids Foundation is working hard to raise awareness of the promise of learning from canine cancer patients who develop many of the same cancers kids do - in the presence of a functioning immune system. Our canine best friends can help us better understand what drives pediatric cancers, how they evolve in the first place, how cancer cells develop and respond to treatment, and very importantly, even evaluate new immunotherapies (nearly impossible in mice)... all with potential translation to kids. “Developing new enabling cancer technologies” and approaches - like getting resources behind better models and canine translational research and comparative studies, improving collaboration (between pediatric and veterinary oncologists, immunologists, genomics experts, stakeholders from the childhood cancer and animal health advocacy communities, government and industry) - these are goals Canines-N-Kids shares with the Moonshot panel and has built its organization upon. Working together, we can find a cure!
